Multi-Scale Simulation of Living Organisms: from Genomes to Human Organs

Massive DNA sequencing, genomic transcription and functional genomics help us decode the action mechanisms of human genes. Additionally, proteomics and molecular-modeling tools are bringing us new knowledge on how proteins work inside cells. And, finally, integrating medical data into biomechanical and neuroinformatics models is allowing us to create a rational representation of human organs and work to design personalized simulations. This great pool of knowledge, on different scales, is one of the main challenges facing computing and opens up the chance to innovate in future medical therapies.

B·Debate —an initiative of Biocat and "la Caixa" Foundation— and the joint computational biology research program of the Barcelona Supercomputing Center (BSC) and the Institute for Research Biomedicine (IRB Barcelona) are holding the symposium Multi-scale simulation of living organisms: from genomes to entire human organs on 19 September 2013 at CosmoCaixa Barcelona.

This symposium, open to the scientific community from the computation and life sciences arenas, will debate multi-scale simulation with informatics models that allow us to study living organisms, the current status and future expectations for human simulation and the technical aspects of simulation and genomics.

It will be held as part of the scientific debates Towards in Silico Humans. A Challenge for Exascale Computing Area, which is open to a small group of experts.
