B·Debate will hold twelve top-notch scientific debates and meetings of significant social impact featuring international experts and scientific leaders from around the world

B·Debate has twelve activities scheduled for this year, which will be held in collaboration with renowned national and international research organizations and centers. These events will feature more than 300 scientists and experts from the various areas of knowledge in the life sciences arena.

The calendar has been created from proposals submitted to the B·Debate 2012 call, which were selected by the B·Debate Scientific Committee made up of experts and scientists from various areas of science in Catalonia. In selecting the proposals, the committee took into account both the scientific relevance and social interest of the challenges posed and their potential to raise awareness of the knowledge and contents generated in the debate and to find solutions to society’s needs. The committee also considered the activity’s degree of multidisciplinarity and international impact.

The topics tackled in 2012 will be varied, though complementary. These will include various areas of biomedical research, like diagnostics, prevention and new therapies for infectious diseases caused by the human papilloma virus; tissue regeneration to treat cardiac pathologies; critical factors that contribute to preterm births; and the latest breakthroughs in the use of lasers for medical applications. In the field of neuroscience, the events will discuss the latest knowledge on the human brain that controls motor function, sensations, memory, learning and emotion, as well as topics related to ethics, like moral judgment and legal responsibility in decision making.

Continuing in the arena of human health, participants will analyze the future of the search for drinking water, which is exposed to a growing variety of chemical substances. Also noteworthy are the debates focusing on transformative research, an innovative, cutting-edge model inspired by high risk/high return research, the search for groundbreaking ideas that looks promising for many of the great challenges facing research in health and the life sciences. Other debate topics will include strategies to improve the impact of translational research by exploiting tools and technology from bioinformatics and medical informatics.

Agriculture and food will also be debated from various approaches. On one hand, participants will discuss the challenges and potential of breakthroughs in new genome sequencing tools for improving crops. On the other hand, they will open up a social debate to analyze whether or not this possibility of genetically modifying crops can really meet the food-production needs of the global population, among other issues.
