He obtained his PhD in 1995 in the Department of Molecular Biology, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, and was a postdoctoral fellow in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology, School of Medicine, University Californa, San Francisco. Later, a posdoctoral fellow and Ramón y Cajal investigator of the Department of Microbial Biotechnology of CNB-CSIC. Since 2005 he leads a research group in this department aimed to study protein secretion systems from pathogenic bacteria and to exploit their biotechnological potential. His current work focuses on engineering E. coli bacteria for biomedical applications, including the design of E. coli strains for cancer therapy using synthetic biology.
